Darius Pouladian-Kari, Rhea Turner, and Joi Chaney are students currently enrolled in GWTeach’s Step 1 and 2 Hybrid course, the first in a multi-course sequence designed for students to excel in STEM teaching. At the end of September, the group had their first experience teaching in DC Public Schools in an 8th grade pre-algebra classroom at the Jefferson Academy Middle School through the GWTeach program.

The lesson on rigid transformations began with an activity where the students were asked to stand up and move around to model transformations. Through starting the lesson by engaging all students, the teachers created an environment where students felt comfortable asking for help and were encouraged to ask follow-up questions, as Rhea notes.

Throughout the rest of the lesson, Darius, Rhea, and Joi utilized activities and games which kept students engaged and motivated to learn about transformations. For Darius, the teaching experience made him “more appreciative of how much teachers put into creating good lesson plans, while also doing their best to improve the educational system.”

The group’s experience highlights the importance of preparation as teachers. Not only did they have a great lesson planned, but their preparation made it possible for them to adjust their lesson when the class started later than expected. Darius explained that this experience gave the group an understanding of the quick decisions and adaptations that teachers have to make daily so that every lesson is successful.

When asked what advice Darius, Rhea, and Joi would give to future GWTeach students, the group stated that teachers should go into their lessons with confidence, connect with students' interests, and not be afraid to adjust their plans when faced with unforeseen challenges.

To have a similar learning and teaching experience, check out GWTeach's spring '23 course offerings, and enroll in a section of GTCH 2003.
