Curricular Requirements for the GWTeach Program

 

Minor in STEM Teaching  + Teacher Certification = 25-28 Credits

 

Required Courses:

GTCH 2003 Step 1 and 2 Hybrid: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching and Lesson Design (3 Credits)*^

This is the introductory GWTeach course where you will learn how to write lesson plans using inquiry-based lesson design, teach with technology, employ classroom management techniques, and analyze student performance. Includes teaching experiences in a local middle school.

GTCH 3101 Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science (3 Credits)*^

An introduction to models of student knowledge acquisition and learning theories for classroom practice, Knowing and Learning seeks to help you develop a powerful toolkit of theory-driven approaches teaching STEM. We will explore what it means to learn and know science and mathematics, while broadening our sense of what is possible in educational practice. Some of the questions we will address are: What standards for knowing can we develop and justify? How are knowing and learning structured, and how does what we know change and develop?

GTCH 3102 Classroom Interactions (3 Credits)*

Introduction to use of curriculum and technology in the classroom for effective teaching of mathematics, science, and engineering. Interplay between teachers, students, content, and the world beyond schools. Focus on design and implementation of instructional activities to encourage success for students that come from diverse backgrounds of ability and experiences. GWTeach students will work to adequately assess their strategies through evaluation, with the goal of equitable outcomes. High school teaching experiences are embedded into the course.

GTCH 3103 Project-Based Learning (3 Credits)*^

​​​​​​This course is based on the premise that schools should engage learners in exploring authentic, important, and meaningful questions of real concern to secondary students. When implemented skillfully, project-based learning promotes equitable participation and is highly engaging for students. Through project works, students learn fundamental science and mathematical concepts and practices applicable to their daily lives. Intensive field-based experiences.

Prerequisites: GTCH 2003 and GTCH 3102

Fulfills Gen. Ed. Requirement: Critical Thinking (Humanities)

Fulfills G-PAC Requirement: Local/Civic Engagement

GTCH 3201W Perspectives on Math and Science (3 Credits)^

​​​​​​This WID course focuses on topics and episodes in the history of science and mathematics. The course focuses on processes by which math and science evolve. The various philosophical perspectives include biology, physics, geology, astronomy, chemistry, and math. Historical perspectives on the content and direction of the sciences are also examined and explored. The course includes a significant engagement in writing as a form of critical inquiry and scholarly expression to satisfy the WID requirement.

Prerequisites: GTCH 2003 or permission of the instructor

GTCH 3202 Research Methods in Math and Science (3 Credits)^

This course focuses on designing experiments to answer scientific questions and reduce systematic and random errors; using statistics to interpret experimental results; application and implementation of science and math research in K-12 classrooms.

Prerequisites: GTCH 2003 or permission of instructor.

Fulfills Gen. Ed. Requirement: Scientific Reasoning with Lab

GTCH 3203 Functions and Modeling (3 Credits)^+

Designed to strengthen and expand knowledge of secondary mathematics topics and address the unique needs of future math teachers. Explores models using linear, exponential, polynomial, and trigonometric functions. Euclidean geometry.

Prerequisites: GTCH 2003 and MATH 1231; or permission of the instructor

Fulfills Gen. Ed. Requirement: Quantitative Reasoning

GTCH 4000 Apprentice Teaching (7 Credits)*

This course provides the culminating experience for students to obtain teacher certification. Students spend twenty-five hours per week completing their Apprentice Teaching internship in a local school teaching in content certification area. Students attend a weekly seminar to discuss topics related to the profession of teaching. 

Prerequisites: GTCH 3101, GTCH 3102, and GTCH 3103
