Faith Arthur

Undergraduate student Faith Arthur (GWTeach) has been selected as a 2021-2022 Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship awardee. The award is sponsored by the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and is intended to support students' academic development through conducting in-depth research with the guidance of a faculty mentor. Faith will conduct her proposed project, Active Citizenship Through Socioscientific Issues, under the mentorship of Dr. Jonathon Grooms. The research project will explore the way teaching socioscientific issues (SSI), informed by cross-cultural research, will develop high school students’ sense of civic obligation and political opinions. Through quantitative and qualitative inquiry, and drawing on past research about SSI and information about interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, this project aims to uncover connections between learning about SSI and active citizenship. Faith has been awarded $5,000 to conduct her research and will present on her findings at the GW Research Showcase in April 2022. Congratulations, Faith!
