Congratulations to Dr Alicia Bitler, one of the GWTeach Master Teachers, for completing her doctorate program at The George Washington University! She now holds a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.

Her journey to completion of this degree was certainly rigorous, yet fullfilling. She began back in 2012, when her eldest son, William was a brand new baby. She looked at him and thought to herself, "I want to do this for you and if I don't start now, I never will." While completing her course work and her dissertation, she continued to work full time and be a mom. It took a total of four years to complete her course work and another four to finish her dissertation. When she started, William was one year old, and as she completed her dissertation, her youngest son, Frederick, was one year old as well!

Dr. Bitler's dissertation research focuses on the puzzle of the underrepresentation of women in science. She had conversations with three females who were getting their degrees in science, but were not planning on becoming scientists. Through these conversations, they told her about their experiences in science from a very young age up until the time they met. She was incredibly interested in hearing their perspectives about what they loved about science and what seemed less appealing to them. In her dissertation, Dr. Bitler wrote narratives for each woman based on the stories they shared with her.

With her dissertation complete, Dr. Bitler is able to spend more time with her two children, William and Frederick, at home. This spring, she is teaching two sections of GWTeach Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching. She looks forward to a time in the future where she can visit the climbing gym more, go camping, music festivals, and just to hang out with some friends. She also wants to learn how to work on her father's 1957 Chevy truck. In addition, now that she has completed her dissertation, she can return to her personal reading list.

Congratulations, again, to Dr. Bitler! It is an incredible milestone and we wish her the best!
